Mm, have they actually read any L.M. Montgomery lately? The whole spark of the Anne series is that Anne is an orphan who isn't wanted by ANYONE and even Marilla almost turns her out because she's not a boy! She almost ruins her relationship with Gilbert twice, first through pride and then self-ignorance, it's only his near-death that makes her realise she loves him. That's not to mention Matthew's death, Ruby's death, the death of her own baby and then what happens in Rilla...
