Yeah I too thought the powers were cool at first, then got kinda old. I guess that goes along with the whole "magic of discovery" thing. The reason Alice's power stayed interesting was because there was a degree of uncertainty about it. And yeah, I totally agree that Bella's use of her power suddenly at the end was unbelievable.
Maybe the vampire history thing would interest me more if the author hadn't attempted to introduce like twenty "cool" new vampires with their own unique histories in about a hundred pages. That could have been an entire book in itself, and it wasn't done well enough for me to be that interested.
