Fandom Meme

Comment to this entry and I'll pick three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] jo_blogs gave me Gilmore Girls, Firefly, and The West Wing. Interesting choices, because they're all shows that I love but don't really talk about that much.

Gilmore Girls:
1. When the show started, we didn't get a WB station at home, so I first heard of the show in college as "that show that comes on before Veronica Mars." At the time, Gilmore Girls reruns were airing twice a day on ABC Family, so I probably first saw it because of one of my roommates. (There was a lot of ABC Family watching that year.) The show appealed to me because it's smart and funny and had a great mother daughter relationship at its core. Rory and Lorelai remind me of me and my mother. I watched it a ton when I had mono sophomore year, which was how I got my mom hooked on it too. When I lived at home the next year we always watched it together. Rory graduated the same year I did, and I remember my mom crying at the end of the finale when Rory leaves Stars Hollow because I was also graduation and leaving for Montreal.

2. Well... I never really got involve in online fandom to begin with. I have a couple seasons on DVD and still think it's a fun show to watch. Because I started watching late, I only saw the last few seasons as they aired (and those weren't the strongest of the bunch), and I actually haven't seen every episode. So I do still have new episodes to see, but I don't see myself becoming any more involved in the future.

3. I don't actually know the episode titles! One that sticks out in my head is the one wear Lorelai goes out of town and instead of inviting bikers and lowlifes over to trash the place, Rory stays in to do her laundry. And then Paris, Jess, and eventually Dean interrupt and there is drama. Generally, the earlier seasons are the best, because the Gilmore Girls were both in Stars Hollow together. The last seasons suffered from pretty bad plots (Rory stealing boats and dropping out of Yale? Lorelai eloping with Christopher? Luke's long-lost daughter? Take your pick.)

4. Basically, no. When the show was still airing, I sometimes discussed what was going on with other people I knew who watched (all my roommates), but not much beyond that. I lurked a bit and poked around to see what was out there in fanfic, but was generally unimpressed. It seemed like it was mostly shippy fic that completely failed to capture the snappy dialogue, character quirks, and obscure cultural references of the show. I do have opinions

5. I don't really know much about the fandom activity these days since the show's been off air for two year now, but I definitely recommend the show.

Firefly:
1. Sadly, I never heard of Firefly until after it was already canceled and Serenity had already been released. [livejournal.com profile] d4ni made me watch the first episode when I visited her during my spring break one year. When I got back home, I immediately got the DVDs from the library and watched the rest. One of my roommates, who was very skeptical of any show set in space, got hooked on it as well. Firefly has such a strange concept (a space western? what?) but since it's Joss Whedon there's great characters and dialogue.

2. Every time I rewatch it sparks my interest again, but it's another fandom I've really only dabbled in.

3. There're only 13 episodes! Can they all be my favorite? Maybe "Out of Gas" because I'm a sucker for flashback "this is how we all met" type stories. (I liked such stories on The West Wing, Torchwood, and How I Met Your Mother as well.)

4. Aside from reading a bit of fic, not really, no. I have a Firefly icon though, does that count?

5. Yes! Lots of people bought the series on DVD and they made a movie... if more people get into it maybe they will make another? (*shakes fist at Fox for canceling Firefly*)

The West Wing:

1. My freshman year, I used to have lunch sometimes with my friend Erika, who lived in my building and loved the show. This is back when Bravo had re-runs on at lunch time (I remember West Wing came on when Saved By the Bell finished... on different channels, obviously), and watching with Erika got me hooked. Before that I knew about the show and had caught bits on TV, but I just couldn't get enthused about the premise. Stupid high school me. Clearly The West Wing is one of the best TV shows ever. It's smart, it's funny, it's idealistic. It has strong women like CJ Cregg, Abby Bartlett, Donna Moss, Ainsley Hayes, and Amy Gardner. And it has canon Josh/Donna!

2. I've pretty much moved on from fandom, although I am still following the Josh/Donna group on LJ, [livejournal.com profile] josh_and_donna. I still love the show though, and I go on periodic West Wing binges. (I have seasons 1-4 on DVD so I've seen all those episodes a lot. I can quote from them extensively.)

3. Two Cathedrals is one of the best episodes of any TV show. It's that good. And in no particular order: Twenty Hours in America, Noel, In the Shadow of Two Gunmen (flashbacks!), Take This Sabbath Day, 17 People, The Women of Qumar, Evidence of Things Not Seen, Dead Irish Writers, The Supremes, The Cold, Election Day... and all the others I didn't mention.

4. I used to be somewhat active, for me. (It's all relative. My level of activity for HP--actually participating in discussion forums! writing a couple drabbles!--is above my norm.) I read a lot of fic at The National Library, which still exists, and lots of other places that don't, and was a member of the Josh/Donna Yahoo! group.

5. As I said, it's one of the best TV shows ever. Even though we have a sane president now and don't need the show for escapism, it's still worth a watch. The first four seasons are the strongest, but there's good stuff in every season. I think they regained some momentum in season 7, which was unfortunately right before the series ended.

Haha you should give me 3 fandoms. I never do memes, but I think you can come up with some amusing ones for me to comment on.

Plus it might force me to actually update my LJ.

Your three are... Babylon 5, Veronica Mars, and Slayers.

Maybe I should judge keep nudging you all the time until you do!

THIS. This times a billion. It's been such a long time since I watched West Wing regularly that I thought I'd start over from the beginning, and it's still as good as ever, maybe even better. I've been watching a side of the DVD a day, and my next viewing has both Take This Sabbath Day and Celestial Navigation. <3 So much love for the CJ has a woot canaw scenes.

And Gilmore Girls FTW, too! Who doesn't love that snappy dialogue, and isn't Lorelai the coolest mom ever?

You know, I'd be willing to give this meme a try, too...

Celestial Navigation is a great one too! Gotta love the secret plan to fight inflation.

Your three fandoms: West Wing, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.

Hee, thanks! I also have this one, by the same person. And I have just posted my first DW fanfic in my LJ and would appreciate some feedback. *hinthint*

Cool! I'll have to take a look at it when I get home.
