A Proud Moment

Once upon a time, I tried to drive home by going through the District. I failed, in the very failiest of fashions. I can now proudly say that I have mastered this route! Unfortunately, I'm not sure it's really any faster than the Beltway at rush hour, but at least I have another choice for those few days when I'm not Metro-ing, which takes even longer.

Unrelated: One of the default moods on LJ is predatory?? Just in case I'm feeling like I need to go out real quick and down a gazelle?

Maybe it is in case you're posting for your cat?

Well that just proves I need to adopt a cat!

Though maybe I should wait until I acquire an apartment. Hmm.

Congrats on the driving VICTORY!!! I fail less often these days too, and it only took 3 freaking years. :P

I was looking at the National Book Fair author schedule today and ARGH I really want to go!!! I want to see Suzanne Collins and Timothy Egan, especially. But I think it's too far for me to bring the 11-month old -- we went over yesterday and my friend suggested taking him to a park 2 blocks away if we wanted a change of scenery from the house. :( Then I started debating whether I could give you books to have signed, but I'm not really that much of an autograph person and I more want to hear them talk.

I know, right!! Two years later, I can kind of get around. I took some crazy-ass route back into the city after Labor Day weekend (trying to avoid the parking lots that are I-70 and I-270) which was quite an experience.

Bummer that you can't make it. I'll be sure to give you highlights if I see anyone awesome. I'm not sure if I'll do any of the signings... the lines are always so long.

If you've got your eye on someone, maybe? ;)

Congratulations on mastering the route!

Haha! That could be it! Although, in that case the picture of Bones with a handgun is not quite right...

After two years I can finally get around my city. Kind of! Yet another reason why it seems a shame to move away.

Is this speculative... or are you moving away and not announcing it far and wide yet? :( DON'T LEAVE!!!!! Ahem, carry on, do what's best for you. :)

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, no. I should have phrased that better. It is purely hypothetical. I don't want to move away, but I haven't heard anything about the job yet. And I'm still applying for stuff here. And by stuff, I mean DCPL.

Whew! Well, I wish you luck, of course. See ya soon?

Hi, my native Ohioan friend. Why do I hear Hootie and the Blowfish every time I turn on the radio, and not just on the "Gen X" station?

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2010-09-18 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good question. To be honest, I don't remember an overabundance of Hootie and the Blowfish on the radio, but it's been three years since I lived in Columbus full time and I know some of the stations have changed formats. Or perhaps they're just feeling nostalgic for the nineties? But it's not like it's an Ohio band or anything. Weird.

I mostly stick to CD101 (http://www.cd101.com/) when I'm in town. If you are at all into Alt Rock and are willing to give some random Indie and local bands a try, it's a great station.

[identity profile] stubefied-by-gd.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Well, they pretty much don't play Hootie at all anywhere else we've been, so it being on the radio more than once was remarkable. (I noticed because somehow Ashwin in India but with MTV completely escaped the Hootie phenonmena, so I kept kicking hit but at name-that-tune. We almost always play name-that-tune, so if there had ever been Hootie before, this would not be new.)

My music-listening now is stay with one station until I hit a song I can't sing along to and then press the seek/scan button until I find something I can. I sing while I drive to keep awake, and I sing while I'm a passenger because I've noticed it helps keep motion-sickness at bay. So I need to stay in about the 85%-sing-able range, which makes new music hard to acquire. But when I am very not-sleepy and behind the wheel I will check that one out.

Ah, yes, new music does not lend itself well to name-that-tune or singing along.

Still... no idea about Hootie, or his Blowfish. A mystery for the ages.
