Political Miscellany

The new rule is I must cut all my entries.

The State of the Union

Oh, President Bush. Seven years later and I still disagree with you on... well, practically everything. The State of the Union address is on about twelve different channels tonight, and I thought I should stay informed and up to date by watching and at least giving it a marginal portion of my attention.

Don't you love it when the camera pans to some audience member who looks like they're bored out of their mind? Of course, Dick Cheney looks like he's sleeping with his eyes open, but he does manage to participate in the chair aerobics. Up, down, up, down, applause, big applause, grimace of disapproval.

Bush wants to give out grade school Pell Grants. Because removing children from public schools will make the public schools better.

BBC News says that the President was interrupted for applause sixty-nine times during the speech. That's a whole lot of applause.

The Ohio Primary

The local news outlets are speculating that the Ohio primary might actually matter. So far, neither the Republican nor Democratic race has a clear front runner. Because of the close races, there's a potential that two leaders may not emerge on Super Tuesday, as all the experts originally predicted. And that could put Ohio back in the game. Ohio, along with Texas, Rhode Island, and Vermont, will hold primary elections on March 4.

Camelot

Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Barack Obama has been big in the news today. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President Kennedy, also endorsed Senator Obama. She had an Op-Ed piece in yesterday's New York Times in which she wrote, "I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president — not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans." How's that for a hugely symbolic endorsement? You can read the whole article here. (I love that the Times website is now completely free, including all the Op-Eds.)

Also, the Governor of Kansas just referenced Kennedy's Inaugural Address in her response to the State of the Union.

Laura Bush

Is a librarian. As First Lady, she has backed initiatives to promote literacy. I approve. (She's also slightly controversial in Libraryland for her support of the USAPATRIOT Act. Yes, there are controversial library issues. And I'll stop there before I end up rambling on teen suicide books, bombs, or hoodies.)

And last, but certainly not least...

David Bowie?

But can the candidates sing? :D

I've always wanted either (a) to play David Bowie in a movie, or (b) for David Bowie to play me in a movie.

You know, after considering both of those options, I really can't say that one is better than the other. Either would be amazingly cool.

That also reminds me that I've still yet to see the movie Labyrinth, which I've been told I should do.

[identity profile] somerled.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I second that recommendation.

Ok, so, Barack Obama gets all the Kennedys and Oprah- does Hillary Clinton even have a chance against that kind of "celebrity" endorsement? As an impartial observer, I know both of them only as well as the Canadian media allows- but now that he's got all that support, I'd have to say that the tables are at the very least leveled (he hasn't got experience, you say? Well, the Kennedy clan believes in him, so why shouldn't I) if not swinging his way- he definitely has the momentum now. I'd like to know what Hillary is going to do to try to take it back.

Also- it doesn't surprise me that Laura Bush is a librarian- or that she has taken some controversial positions. I wonder what she thinks of people who wear hoodies.

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Obama certainly has a lot of momentum going right now with his big win in South Carolina this week. The endorsement's certainly help out, though I don't think most people change their votes based on that. (It just lends legitimacy.) However, and maybe you just don't get this in your news, Clinton has two victories under her belt and actually has a higher delegate count right now.

Edwards hasn't won a contest yet, but he's still putting up respectable figures as well. There's been some talk that he could end up being very important if the race is still undecided by the convention.

Laura Bush - Librarian BAMF.

Imagine her something like "The Paper" in Read or Die. Lolol.

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I want to be "The Paper." Seriously. I mean, she works at the British Library and saves the world. What could be better?

No, see, the Pell grant thing is genius. All the kids who actually want to learn, or whose parents give a flying flip, will go to private schools, which will stimulate the economy. Then ones who are left we can drug and ship to Central America to even up the balance from all the illegal immigrants. When they see the little monsters we breed here, I don't think as many people will be so eager to come. Plus, their governments will start proper border patrols to keep us out. Now, Bush can't say that second part of the plan out loud just yet, but I can read his mind.

**To anyone who isn't Alexis, don't take this the wrong way. I love kids. And immigrants. Even illegal ones. I think I like them best.**

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh... combining education and immigration policy. I like it. So would all the children left in public school get deported, or just the one's that fail the standardized tests?

[identity profile] stubefied-by-gd.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
That all depends on whether we've got ten million kids left or not, and how big they are, for immigration-balancing purposes.

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So under this new plan, immigration would be balanced by mass rather than by illegal immigrant/public school children head count?

[identity profile] stubefied-by-gd.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, volume. One of the arguments against immigration is that we don't have enough space, so we need to get rid of the equivalent of the volume of ten million fully-grown adults.

And to complicate things further, offspring of illegal immigrants can really only be counted as three fifths of their true weight.

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
This plan will also stimulate the economy by providing employment for all the people needed to calculate the volume measurements (undocumenteds need not apply).

Exactly! There are also implications for preventative health care re: encouraging healthy eating.

Such comprehensive brilliance.
