I have many skills.

This weekend was very busy. I read some articles, wrote a paper, read some more articles, looked up articles online, read those too...

Saturday afternoon I took a break from school things and headed over to the Home Despot. Strangely enough it was quite busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon in April. Who'd have thunk it? I went there in search of a new mailbox. The plastic flag had long since fallen off before I moved here, and this week the door broke, so every time the mail is delivered it falls off. It was definitely time for a new one, but I almost changed my mind when I saw the huge $70 ones for sale. Who pays that much for a mailbox? Luckily they had the small, plain $15 variety tucked away down the aisle.

So I thought to myself, "How hard can putting up a mailbox really be?" I unscrewed the old mailbox successfully, then discovered that the new one was smaller and wouldn't fit on the base. So I'd need a saw. Or four.

The right tools for the job, I has them.

Those who know me well know that I'm liable to cut my hand off just cutting a bagel, let alone sawing actual wood. (Notice the sad looking, doorless, flagless mailbox to the left.)

The little saw is less scary looking, but was also less effective.

But eventually I shortened all three of the support boards, and collected many strange looks from the neighbors. Then I had to unscrew and move them, because the holes on the sides of the new mailbox didn't line up right. That whole process would have been a whole lot easier with a cordless drill. I had a ratcheting screwdriver. That's, um, almost the same.

I finally got the mailbox all secured... and the door wouldn't open. More unscrewing and wishing for a cordless drill ensued.

But finally I got it all put back together, with no bleeding involved. And I only hit myself in the face with a tool once. Because I am awesome! Now if only I got anything in the mail besides bills and Netflix DVDs.

Also, I tested out my new-old waffle iron this morning. I will be eating chocolate chip waffles for breakfast for the next few days because I made way too many for one person. Yum! There's also some Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream I picked up at Trader Joe's last night that's calling to me. End of semester stress requires lots of comfort food.

Yay you and your mad mailbox repair skillz!

I approve of this. Mint chocolate chip is made of win.

Ice cream of any sort is good, but mint chocolate chip seemed just the thing.

Thanks, babe!

And yeesssss. <3 Gabrielle icon. Aren't you impressed at my ability to geek out in fandoms I don't know well?

I am!

But the hotness of Gabrielle goes beyond fandom alone!

You've corrupted me... I was actually thinking last night, "Hey, I could watch some Xena on Netflix. OH WAIT I HAVE NO TIME."

Wow, that is a very productive weekend! You should be proud of your handywork. Mmmm, waffles.

I am! It rained all day today, so it was very satisfying to get my dry mail out when I got home.

As soon as I read "How hard can putting up a mailbox really be?" I was all, "NOOOOOOOO!" just like in a horror movie when they go into the basement. Congratulations! You prevailed!

Haha! It was harder than I wanted, but not horror movie scary, thank goodness. For my next trick, "How hard can installing a car stereo be?" I think I'll save that one for after the semester ends, though.

How do people without multiple saws get their mail?

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They get those big one piece green Rubbermaid mailboxes. (Which is so much less awesome than my saws.)
