Last night I finished the second season of Doctor Who, and I've just gotta say... wow. For the sake of spoilers, I'll put my thoughts under a cut. (Seriously, [profile] d4ni, watch it. You'll love it.)

Where to start? There was so much that was great about the season finale, which is actually in two parts. First off, I knew that Billie Piper, who plays Rose, leaves at the end of the season. The third season has already aired, and she's not in it... so it's kind of hard to miss. However, I had no idea how Rose's character departed from the show. I was a wee bit apprehensive that she might be killed off, especially when "Army of Ghosts" opened with a voiceover from Rose in which she states, "This is the story of how I died." (Gah!)

One of the elements that was very interesting about the season was the exploration of the consequences of traveling with the Doctor, particularly the consequences of returning to a normal life. In "School Reunion" Sarah Jane says that the experience is worth the eventual (or inevitable) pain of leaving. Rose sets her mind on being different. The Doctor promises he'll never abandon her, and she makes up her mind to stay with him forever. Which led me back, again, to worrying about her death. Because she clearly wasn't going to leave the Doctor willingly!

In case I didn't already like her enough, Rose was quite a BAMF. Taunting the Daleks with the story of how she destroyed all their brethren was pretty gutsy... and totally awesome. Mickey Smith was pretty kick-ass, too. He really grew on me through this season, which surprised me a little. Pete is back again, and Jackie's there, but she's not his Jackie... and in the end neither of them cares. They're kind cute, Rose's parents. The Daleks versus the Cybermen. Can you really blame the people of the world for being terrified? There was one scene where I think all the dialog went something like this "Delete! Delete! Exterminate! Exterminate! Delete! Exterminate!" And the Cybermen are better at dying. LOLz

The action was intense, but the last ten minutes of "Doomsday" are what really stuck with me. Rose chooses to be stay with the Doctor and be separated from her family forever... then suddenly she's gone. David Tennant and Billie Piper are just incredible. It's so clear that they're both completely heartbroken. (Yeah, I cried. I do that.) And he freaking burns up a sun to say goodbye. I'm going to miss Rose in the next season, but I'm glad she had such an amazing send off. As terrible as it was, it's fitting that in the end she was essentially ripped away, because there's no other way she would have left.

There's more I could rave about, but I think I've gone on long enough. Seriously, the more I watch of this show, the more I love it!
