Apr. 23rd, 2008

Hillary Clinton earned her expected victory in yesterday's Pennsylvania Democratic primary. Even though I'm supporting Obama, I can't help but admire her resiliance. At the same time, I really, really want the primaries to be over so that the Democratic nominee, whoever it is, can focus on John McCain and the general election. I do honestly think that either Clinton or Obama would be a strong candidate, and there aren't huge policy differences between them. But the rules say we have to pick one, so let's just do that already!

Honestly, the election cycle is waaay too long. Do you think maybe people will learn anything from the 2008 election? Like how moving all the primaries earlier and earlier just means we have to hear the sound bites ad nauseum for the longer time. It's not like much of substance has happened between March 4 and April 22--Obama's speech on race being the notable exception. But there haven't been any policy revelations. What if we had all the primaries in the summer, right before the conventions? If we tightened things up a bit, maybe it wouldn't be so much of a circus!

Many writers have captured the common sentiment of many Democrats: Why won't Hillary Clinton just go away? (Can't figure that out myself, since despite her gains, it's still likely that Obama will eventually prevail. But it's her decision to make.) Maureen Dowd wins for the go-away-Hillary syndrome to Dr. Seuss in her column today:

Before they devour themselves once more, perhaps the Democrats will take a cue from Dr. Seuss’s “Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!” (The writer once mischievously redid it for his friend Art Buchwald as “Richard M. Nixon Will You Please Go Now!”) They could sing:

“The time has come. The time has come. The time is now. Just go. ... I don’t care how. You can go by foot. You can go by cow. Hillary R. Clinton, will you please go now! You can go on skates. You can go on skis. ... You can go in an old blue shoe.

Just go, go, GO!”

Hee.

Next up is Guam on May 3. (It's all up to you Guam!) But if Guam's 9 delegates don't tip the scales, it's up to you Indiana and North Carolina! Or you, West Virginia! Or maybe it's up to Kentucky and Oregon. And their primaries aren't until May 20. Ahhh!
