TV Premieres

aka Why I got nothing done this week.

Many of the shows I used to follow aren't on anymore. Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars ended last season; The West Wing ended the year before that, and Bravo stopped showing reruns all the time. ER is still on, but I stopped caring after the cast changed yet again. So this week I decided to find some new shows to watch because that just seemed like a lot more fun than reading about cataloging.

Watching TV here is a challenging experience. More of the channels are in French than in English, and I haven't completely figured out which ones are which yet. Since I don't understand French, those are usually out, unless there's nothing else on. I have caught the tail end of a few episodes of Doctor Who (which I've been told is addictive) in French, and the other day I watched some Alias en française while I ate my lunch. Neither of those made any sense.

When the channels are in English, it's still difficult to figure out what's on. We have 5 4.5 American stations: ABC, CBS, and NBC, as well as a channel that is something FOX and sometimes the CW. Then there are two Canadian networks, Global and CTV, which show many of the popular American prime time shows, but not always on the same night or same time. That means that sometimes, the same show is on two channels at once, and sometimes the same show is on two different channels at different times (for instance, ER is on at 7pm and at 10pm). In the case of CSI: Miami, it's on three stations at the same time: twice in English, and once in French. Horatio and his sunglasses are just as strange dubbed in French. And some of the shows we just can't find (when do we have FOX? when do we have CW? who knows!) Comedy Central doesn't exist, but The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are on CTV at midnight. Unfortunately, that's not so compatible with my morning classes.

Here's the rundown of what I did manage to see this week:

Heroes - People kept telling me to watch this, but once I had missed half a season, I figured it was pointless trying to catch up. I decided to give it a try on Monday, and it seems pretty good, but I've definitely got some catching up to do. Supposedly, Kristen Bell joined that cast this season, and Milo Ventimiglia's in it. So it'll be kind of like watching Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars at the same time, right? Oh, and I love Masi Oka.

CSI: Miami -
I don't even like this show, but my mom loves it, so I got used to watching it. It's fun to make fun of. And now apparently Horatio has a long lost son? Mmmkay.

Chuck -
Saw this when NBC re-aired it on Saturday. Seems moderately funny, but we'll see. I was busy working on my catalog project when this was on, so I honestly wasn't paying that much attention. (Because ZOMG the OCLC catalog rocks my world. Or not.)

House -
So are Cameron, Chase, and Foreman gone for good? I missed the credits, so I don't know if they're in them. But House and Wilson are fun together, so it's nice to have a break from the team and all their angst.

Law and Order: SVU -
At least one of my shows is still on! I'm addicted, what can I say? Mariska Hargitay cut her again (apparently Benson had plenty of salon time during her suspension!) and Cynthia Nixon was a crazy person. Cool.

Private Practice -
Boring and predictable. At least if the show flops, they can just have Addison move back to Seattle.

The Bionic Woman -
What I should have been watching instead of Private Practice! The pilot kind of bombards you with information--a little too much information, really. They didn't really need to set up every subplot in one episode. Other than that, I liked it. Kinda cheesy (uh, duh... it's a remake of The Bionic Woman), but in a good way. There are lots of attractive people in the cast, which never hurts.

Dirty Sexy Money -
Has a weird title. I only watched it because whatever it was up against started out really, really boring. I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually quite funny. I think the main actor used to be on Sports Night, which really has no bearing on anything. I still can't figure out how money is "sexy." Were the writers turned on by money? It's just paper with a dead president and a number on it.

Grey's Anatomy -
Old roommates got me started watching, and my new roommates are equally addicted. The season premiere was incredibly eventful. Izzy annoys me more and more with each passing moment. The whole George/Izzy thing came out of nowhere and feels completely fake to me, and now all Izzy does is run around being selfish. And dumb. Call a vet, you idiot! Uh, anyway. I liked Christina and Bailey, as usual. I felt a little bad for Meredith's sister, but not; she has horrible timing, what kind of reaction was she expecting?

The Office -
I love The Office. (Many of my friends say they don't get it, but I think it's hilarious.) Unfortunately, it's on at the same time as Grey's, and we only have one TV here (see comment on roommates, above). On Friday I got in a big fight with the NBC website because it said I couldn't watch the episode online from my location (Canada). And they took the episodes off iTunes this year. Grrr. Anyway... Michael is insane and Jim and Pam are adorable!

ER -
Uncle Jesse was there and Neela was hurt and everybody was scampering around... but I couldn't hear anything since no one would shut up about the Grey's episode that just ended, so I gave up and found something else to do. Since I don't really care about this show, I'm not all that concerned.

And that is that. I really did watch too much TV this week.

Also, we have a DVD player now! I've really been wanting to watch some West Wing episodes, but the DVD drive on my laptop is broken. Hooray for the DVD player!
