First, although I'm working my way through some Classic Who, I'd yet to meet either UNIT or the Sontarans prior to this episode, so I really can't compare any of that. Second, wooooo!! Fantastic episode!
Donna flies the TARDIS! Rock on! The Doctor’s all ready with his mallet and his warnings about the 1980s, but honestly, what room does he have to talk? He seems to forget all the times he’s ended up in the wrong year, wrong continent, wrong universe...
I LOVE DONNA! <3
Donna meeting Martha is awesome. It’s very different than Rose and Sarah Jane’s meeting in “School Reunion.” The Doctor anticipates some competition, but Donna and Martha seem to like each other immediately and have some fun teasing the Doctor. (“He is too skinny for words. You give ‘im a hug, you get a paper cut!” ROFL) He doesn’t know what hit him! It's refreshing that Donna isn't jealous, and it shows how much Martha has changed since series 3 than she takes to Donna so quickly.
It’s clear here, like in Torchwood, that Martha is having a fantastic life. She’s qualified as a doctor, she has a job she enjoys, and she's engaged. Way to go Martha! She seems to be pretty trusted at UNIT, because they can clearly see what a BAMF she is.
“Donna, by the way. Donna Noble, since you didn’t ask! I’ll have a salute.” And he salutes her! Buahahahaha. Have I mentioned that I love Donna? She doesn't take crap from anyone!
But getting serious for a second, Series 4 thus far really does seem to be guided by Donna's journey. This week was her first trip home, and we already see how much Donna's experiences have affected her. Martha warns Donna about the potential dangers of traveling with the Doctor, and honestly makes it sound rather scary. Donna's already aware that the Doctor's lifestyle is dangerous, but then Martha tells her about her family being imprisoned and tortured. “He’s like fire," she says. "Stand to close and people get burnt." I know Martha is concerned for Donna's family, but I can't not wonder (again) whether it's really Donna herself who should be worried. In a way, the conversation is similar to Rose and Sarah Jane in "School Reunion", only the tone of that episode more positive; traveling with the Doctor is worth the hurt it could cause. Martha seems a lot more cautious.
Donna's "I'm going home" scene was great. The Doctor was his dense and absolutely adorkable self. His speech is so earnest. It's clear that in that short time she's made a huge impression on him, and he really, really doesn't want her to leave yet. (No, he wants to take her to the Medusa "Yes, I am significant" Cascade.) And Donna, she just listens to his heartfelt compliments until the "great big outer space dunce" realizes she's not leaving for good. :D
I liked the scene where Donna returns home for the first time. A neighbor alerts her that she’s only been gone for a few days, but for Donna, so much has changed in that time. The flashbacks seem somewhat unnecessary at such an early point in the season, but I think the purpose is to show Donna’s thoughts, that juxtaposition of the ordinary and the fantastic. I think it's an experience that a lot of people can related to--not the space travel specifically--but the idea of coming home after some time away, and feeling a sense of sameness or normality along with some change in yourself.
The Doctor’s visit to the Rattigan Academy is wonderful. I think this is as buoyant and hyperactive as we’ve seen the Doctor so far this series. He’s bouncing around, admiring technology, correcting grammar (lol!), defending Ross, wearing the sexy specs… And Luke doesn’t like sharing his sandbox with other kids. Do y’see, Mr. Conditional Clause?” What a snotty little brat. Don’t you wanna smack him?
I like Ten's habit of dealing with a serious situation by turning it into a game. He makes stupid puns and taunts "Staal the not quite so undefeated anymore, but nevermind" and plays some impromptu squash. Saving the world is serious stuff, but, hey, why can't it be fun too!
The Sontarans seem like decent baddies. Ross definitely pegs them right; they're a bunch of talking baked potatoes! Talking baked potatoes bitter about being excluded from "the finest war in history." Poor things. I kind of feel bad for them, except not, because their purpose is basically to glorify warfare, and I'm not really down with that. I'm not sure I completely grasp their plan at this point (genius boy + evil GPS +poisonous gas + hypnotism + and Clone!Martha = ???) but whatever. Also, the Sontarans have the classic Sci-Fi/fantasy ridiculous weak spot. Nice!
And finally, a few notes to the characters: 1) Martha: WTF? Following zoned out foot soldiers down a deserted basement corridor. Well, duh, something bad's gonna happen! 2) Donna: Smash the window with a rock!
So another fun episode and a Cliffhanger of DOOM! Can't wait to see more of evil Clone!Martha next week. :D

“It’s not easy, is it, being clever? You look at the world and you connect things, random things. You think, why can’t anyone else see it? The rest of the world is so slow.”The Doctor definitely sees something of himself in Luke, though. Luke has the potential to help the world with his knowledge, but he's bitter and lonely and wants to rule the world instead. (And he has his track-suited storm troopers. When do they come in?)
“Yeah.”
“And you’re all on your own.”
