Fushigi Yugi

It's been a rough week for me, school wise, so to make up for all my frustrations, I've been watching a whole lot of Fushigi Yugi. Because it's soooo addictive. Last night I finally finished the series. It only took me seven years to see all 52 episodes! :D

This series sure does get depressing towards the end. I knew that Nuriko dies, since I read that far in the manga, but then everything just starts going from for the Suzaku warriors. It turns into a bit of a bloodbath, to be honest.

Everyone wants to rape Miaka. Poor girl! I can see why this would never make it on US television, at least not a major network. (I think the dub showed on cable at some point, but not many people actually watch the international channel.) Also, Miaka and Tamahome break up about once an episode. (So they’re kind of like Meredith and McDreamy in that way, only animated and much, much cooler.) Drama, drama, drama.

Supposedly one of the signs that Tamahome isn’t “real” is that he doesn’t have a shadow in Miaka’s world. Then several minutes later they show him running back towards her… complete with a shadow. LOL.

I’m glad Miaka gets to be a little bit bad-ass and save the day at the end! Even though Yui’s a bitch for most of the series, I’m glad that she and Miaka finally make up and go to high school together (aww… how cute) where they finally get new outfits to wear! And that Tamahome is reincarnated for [profile] d4ni to swoon over... I mean, so he and Miaka can be together. (And yes, a little bit because Hikaru Midorikawa is cool.)

In general I really liked the ending. It actually has an ending, unlike some series, and even though a lot happens at the end, it didn't get too crazy in the final episodes like Escaflowne. Maybe in another seven years I'll get to watch the OAVs...

I object! I love Escaflowne. I do admit that it got really crazy in the final eps but for me, it was all leading up to that anyway. But at least you've HEARD of Esca and seen it, unlike 95% of people I talk to. But the movie... oy.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love Escaflowne too, it just made me sad how rushed it was at the end. It was originally planned to have more episodes, so they ended up cramming more into fewer episodes. Even so, it's awesome!

They planned to have more episodes? Wow, I did not know that. You learn something new every day! I'm now mourning the lost opportunity of more Van/Hitomi angst (but only because they would be together in the end).

Yep, I believe there were supposed to be 39 episodes total. Just a strange little factoid that has been taking up space somewhere in the back of my brain for many years.

Now I kind of want to rewatch Escaflowne...

Oh, and the movie... I think I've only seen it once, so I don't remember a whole lot, except that the drastic change in character design for Hitomi was kinda freaky.

Haha, we're both using Austen book-reading heroines! :D

How could you forget Folken transforming into David Bowie from Labyrinth? I wanted to scream when I saw him and I like that movie but damn, they should not have touched him!

Because Austen is awesome and reading books is awesome! Which Austen-heroine is yours? Is it from one of the new BBC versions?

I actually haven't seen Labyrinth, so I guess I wouldn't have made the connection when I saw the movie.

From a recent ITV adaptation of Northanger Abbey. Catherine Morland, who reads a little too much for her own good! ;)

YOU HAVEN'T SEEN... *is speechless* YOU MUST WATCH IT!

Of course! Not many features but perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. It's Jennifer Connelly's first starring roll.

This is tragic! I just checked Amazon, and all they have is the 1986 BBC version. Maybe there's not a region 1 DVD release yet?

That's ridiculous! O.o

I just looked on Amazon.ca and here it is! Don't know where you were looking or what film you were looking for. ^^;;

But it is available!

I just realised you meant Northanger Abbey... *slams head against desk* Sorry! I thought you meant Labyrinth...

I promise I will try to procure and watch the DVD of Labyrinth!

Just want to comment as another person that's seen Escaflowne! How much of a letdown was the whole Van/Hitomi thing, anyway? I mean... a HUG?! A frakking HUG?! That's all we get. It's not even right. And Dilandau being a girl... okay fine, if it's explained, but wtf?

Yes, seriously! Allen gets a snog and Van gets a hug? NOT RIGHT.

As for Dilandau, I've always wondered if anything would make Celena revert back to him.

[identity profile] alexiscartwheel.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
But hugs are so romantic! ::swoon:: But no, totally, all that build up for a hug isn't cool.

So... Xena? Is that Gabrielle then? OMG BLACK POWDER.

[identity profile] d4ni.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes it's Gabrielle. Three of her. Dancing. Naked. Mmm.

[identity profile] d4ni.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you want to know? Yes. Could I possibly even explain? Probably not. Srsly, Xena has some of the most cracked out episodes ever. It's great.
