and sometimes i watch tv shows
Usually about a couple weeks from the end of an academic term (quarter, semester, whatever) I get overwhelmed by and/or stop caring about school and end up reading tons of YA novels and marathoning TV or anime. Now as a general rule I watch too much TV—it is my grad school procrastination tool of choice—but lately I am taking that to a whole new extreme.
d4ni kept talking about how great Legend of the Seeker is, and I was kind of "oh, whatever, it's just some syndicated swords and sorcery thing." And then I finally watched some. I thought the first episode was okay but a tad cheesy, and then I watched the second and OMG THIS SHOW IS SO AMAZING. I'm almost completely caught up on seasons 1 and 2 in only a week and a half because I just can't stop. It somehow has the absolutely perfect combo of magic, sword fights, hot people, bamfy women, pretty scenery, CRACK, and actual good vs. evil plottiness. And the fandom is full of frivolity and femslash and more crack.
My icon right there *points up* is Kahlan from LotS. She's a Confessor, which basically means she can kill you with her brain, or alternately her daggers, and she's on a mission to help the eponymous Seeker defeat the big baddie who's terrorizingNew Zealand the Midlands.
You should all go watch! Really! Here are 10 good reasons to watch Legend of the Seeker and then I will shut up about it... for now.
This is an exciting week, because everything is new! First there was Chuck and OMG SHAW IS TRYING TO KILL SARAH! NOOOOOO! Next week's episode would have been the season finale (then NBC ordered extra episodes) so it's bound to be good. I wonder if they will really change things up and ship the team off to Italy, or if there will be an eleventh hour switcheroo that lands them back in Burbank? Either way, I'll be glad to see the end of angsty Sarah making assumptions about the way Chuck is changing instead of just talking to him. Then there was Bones and Fringe finally returning from hiatus last night. I tried to watch, but the Princess had a friend over and they were talking really loud (in the same room) and watching YouTube videos, so I couldn't completely follow what was going on in Bones, and I just gave up on Fringe. Bones made me laugh though, cause the crime was in the Metro system, you know, the one my mother thinks I should write a book about. I wonder if the mysterious Rock Creek Metro station is like the Tube stations in Neverwhere.
As if that were not enough, there is new Ashes to Ashes tonight and new Doctor Who tomorrow. I've been totally out of the loop Whoniverse wise, but I saw a couple of the recent trailers and the episode synopses from the Radio Times, and now I'm excited for it! And to top it off, I've got two more episodes of Caprica to catch on Hulu and all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has suddenly become available on Netflix instant play.
I am never going to get any schoolwork done. Ever.

I'm only two episodes behind now. OMG "Torn" was awesome because MORE KAHLAN. And "Princess" for LOL CARA (and WTF Zedd).

Doctor Who fandom, on the other hand, is serious business as usual!

Don't worry about being out of the loop with Who, this is a new series, new Doctor, all new characters (except for River Song) and new storylines. Best time for you to come back! :D
OMG, Ashes to Ashes. The first episode was the strongest opening episode of all three series, which makes me sad that this is the last series EVER. And the writers have remembered that Gene isn't all that nice a character and took great pleasure in reminding the audience (WOO!). New character was nicely creepy. All in all, very promising!

I think it could be good that I've been out of the loop a bit, because everything really will be new and fresh. It seems that many of the Who-fans on my f-list have abandoned the series for good though, based on how extremely quiet things are this evening.
Ashes to Ashes was fantastic! The beginning especially was very surreal and cool, and Keeley Hawes was great as usual. Last series Gene was very Big Damn Hero, so I'm all for exploring his less savory side again.

You honestly haven't missed much. S4 with Donna was pretty good and of the specials, I'd watch The Last Doctor and The Waters of Mars. Maybe The End of Time if you feel so inclined though it's definitely not RTD's best or the best send off.
A lot of people have abandoned it PURELY because Tennant and RTD have left. I can tell you right now that The Eleventh Hour was COVERED in AWESOMESAUCE and Matt Smith is fantastic and everybody (except diehard haters) has now acknowledged this.

I get that people were very attached to that era, but it's the nature of the show that the whole thing gets shaken up every few years. It seems like if you loved one Doctor, it'd be good to at least give the next a chance. (And then they wouldn't miss the awesomesauce!!)

Exactly! A lot of people are having this "NO, Gene cannot be a villain, DNW!" reaction and I'm thinking Pfff, he was never meant to be a hero, get over it. I mean, the man was a TUMOUR in Sam's brain for God's sake. A benign tumour but still, a TUMOUR. An ABNORMALITY.

I'm not sure Legend of the Seeker would be my thing. However, when I was 12 I was obsessed with the Adventures of Sinbad and I used to watch Xena on a regular basis. So you never know.
