The other night [livejournal.com profile] d4ni was looking for the third season of Doctor Who and saw a comment claiming that the episode "Blink" is the best episode of any TV show ever. I thought it was a pretty awesome episode, a lot like an eerie, open-ended monster-of-the-week X-File, but with "timey-whimey" stuff. But is it the best episode of any show EVER? How do you even figure that out without first watching all the shows ever produced? And who'd want to do that?

This led to a discussion of our personal favorite TV episodes, and Danielle of course wanted a definitive favorite episode from me. (Ahh! Decision making!) She picked two episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, neither of which I've seen, so I couldn't really argue. (My Buffy knowledge is haphazard at best, based on viewing a smattering of episodes during the summer I had mono.) I'd just like to mention, for the record, that she cheated on her own challenge.

I considered cheating too, but I managed to narrow it down with one. Of all the series I have watched, I think the best single episode is "Two Cathedrals," the second season finale of The West Wing. President Bartlett attends the funeral of his long time secretary, Mrs. Landingham. In the same day, he gives an interview disclosing that he has Multiple Sclerosis, and has to decide whether or not to run for a second term. Martin Sheen is at his best, especially during his scenes in the National Cathedral. The staff are also excellent; they're confused about their futures, but still devoted to the President. I absolutely love the final sequence leading up to the season end cliffhanger, accompanied by Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms." It's amazing stuff.

Yes, really. There are plenty of good shows that aren't set in space. If you watched any of them, maybe you'd realize that!

Big resounding YES on Two Cathedrals. It's such a powerful episode and it makes me cry every time I see it. Everyone is just fantastic in it - Martin Sheen should have won that Emmy!

I've never seen Doctor Who or Buffy, though, so I'll take your word for it on those ones.

There are so many fabulous West Wing episodes, but "Two Cathedrals" still stands out from the crowd. Also, your icon is awesome!
