*is spammy*

So I got this e-mail from the library this afternoon. My copy of Breaking Dawn came in today, and is now on hold at the library. In Columbus. As of today, I live in Virginia.

*facepalm*

I was hoping it would come in while I was in Columbus, but had pretty much given up. The same thing happened right after I left Kansas: all the books I reserved months before finally came in, all in the same week.

LIBRARIES ARE MY JOB! WHY DO THEY SMITE ME??

Now I will have to put Breaking Dawn on hold again, which means I first must get a new library card (one more for the collection... I think that'll make it six), which requires that I first receive a piece of mail. For once I'll be thankful for my bank statement!

That made no sense at all... which is good! Congratulations on your un-spoilery vagueness!

What are you doing in Quebec City? Did you go to IFLA?

I just picked up a copy from the DC library. I think I'm the first one to check it out because there are no other stamps on it!

*is jealous* They still stamp things there? Most public libraries just print out receipts now. Yay for a brand new copy though!

Yeah, seriously: they use the stamps. It's so primitive. Seattle switched over the receipts ages ago. I really, REALLY miss the Seattle Public Library. DC's library is... not very good. :( I don't know if it's lack of funding or limited interest, but it's a far cry from Seattle's. Then again, if not many people use it I guess that's why I got Breaking Dawn wiht practically no wait at all.

Yeah, I've heard not so great things about the DC library, and I think lack of funding is a pretty big part of it. Johnson County (in Kansas) and Montreal did not have good public libraries, either, in my opinion, though I think I may have been spoiled in Ohio. Seattle has the spiffy new main library building, right?

Yup! It's an interesting building, but I didn't go there much because it wasn't my local branch. The main thing is that institutionally the SPL is rock solid -- awesome collection (tons of indie music, DVDs, lots of copies of the popular books) and the online reservation system works well. Alas, DC is lacking!
