The last few weeks I've been itching to do something musical, but unfortunately I accidentally left all my sheet music in Columbus. Yesterday I schlepped through the rain to the Performing Arts Library on campus. I found copies of the same flute and oboe method books I used to work from, and I picked up two Mozart concertos--KV 313 and 314.

I'd like to practice the Oboe Concerto in C major to use as an audition piece. I found out the other day that the university has a Repertoire Orchestra that holds open auditions for non-music majors each semester. If I can fit it into my spring schedule between classes and work, I'd really like to audition. It's been well over a year since I played in any ensemble, and even longer since I've done any real oboe playing. I've got lots of practicing ahead of me since my embouchure is pretty terrible, but first I really need to find some new reeds. I spent a good hour today testing and adjusting mine (I have fourteen), but almost all of them are too old to be useful.

On a different musical front, I've got a new set of song recs under the cut. Have a listen!

Ladyhawke - "Dusk to Dawn"

Keane - "Spiralling"

The Verve - "Love is Noise"

Metronomy - "Heartbreaker"

Sigur Rós - "Inní mér syngur vitleysingur"

Glasvegas - "Daddy's Gone"

The Week That Was - "The Airport Line"

Tilly and the Wall - "Beat Control"

Black Kids - "Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo)"

Ben Folds & Regina Spektor - "You Don't Know Me"

Bon Iver - "For Emma"

Jane Vain and the Dark Matter - "C'mon Baby Say Bang Bang"

And if you've heard any great new songs lately, please tell me about them! I listen to lots of different music, and I'm always looking for suggestions.

Yay music! A few quick comments:

I'm not a huge Ben Folds fan, but that song is awesome. Besides the hotness of Regina Spektor, I really like the heavy bass beat combined with the piano and violins.

Also, <3 The Verve, Sigur Ros, Tilly & the Wall, and Black Kids. I also really like that Jane Vain and the Dark Matter song. The singer's voice is intriguing. Maybe I just have a thing for bands with unnecessarily long names.

I like Ben Folds because piano rock is awesome. Also, Colin Murray had violins for the Mobile Disco the other week and it was pretty much amazing.

Sooo.... what are your thoughts on the repetition of "the beat!" at the end of "Beat Control"? I kept wanting to ask you this week, but I had to make sure you'd heard the song first. Is it the new "the drums"?

I just heard the Jane Vain song the other day on one of my "fake" radio stations, and I figured you'd like it! I'm having trouble deciding who they remind me of, but I like their sound.

"The beat" doesn't bother me as much as "the drums," but that could be because I've only heard the song a few times. If I heard it over and over again for weeks on end, it would probably become the new "the drums." But I do love me some Tilly & The Wall, so I might have to forgive them for being repetitive. <3

Fair enough. I just thought I'd ask, cause someone even pointed out on the radio that she liked the song except for "the beat" at the end. :D

There's also a new Snow Patrol single that I like. It upsets me that Snow Patrol got co-opted to be in every single episode of Grey's Anatomy and everyone's emo fanvids. Boo. I liked them before they were an emo cliche!
