Last night we saw Margot & the Nuclear So and So's, [livejournal.com profile] d4ni's favorite band. The show was at a smallish bar in Lawrence, the local college town about forty minutes west of home. Normally I don't make a habit of going out on Wednesday nights, but it was so worth the resulting lack of sleep!

I don't go to many concerts (at least not ones I'm not playing in) but I do really love live music. The two opening acts were both good, and Margot was fabulous! If you haven't heard of Margot & the Nuclear So and So's (and you probably haven't), they're an indie orchestral rock band (kind of like The Arcade Fire). They've got guitars, keyboard, violin, trumpet, horn, cello, and plenty of interesting percussion. Watching the percussion guy dance was one of the most amusing parts of the night. You have never seen a tambourine played with such enthusiasm and abandon!

As you probably tell from the picture, we were standing very close to the stage (the beauty of seeing an indie band at a small venue!) so everything was good and loud, and I could see well when flaily-dancing guy in front of me wasn't, well, flailing too much. They'd played some new songs from their upcoming album and some lovely old stuff. My personal favorites are "Skeleton Key", which is just all around amazing, and "Paper Kitten Nightmare" because it has meowing. 'Nuff said.

There are more pictures at my Flickr account and some videos here. :D

More Ottawa

Thursday was our final day in Ottawa. We checked out of our hotel in the morning, but luckily we were able to check all our bags in the cloakroom at the National Gallery. Roaming around Ottawa with a rolling suitcase all day did not seem like a very fun plan.

I thought there was a lot of interesting stuff to see at the National Gallery. They have a large section of Canadian Art, which was very cool since it was mostly artists I'm unfamiliar with. In addition to painting and sculpture, the Canadian Gallery includes some First Nations art and an entire chapel that was relocated to the National Gallery. I'm not usually big into contemporary art, but there were several pieces in that gallery that I enjoyed. One was a multi-room installation; one of the rooms had a disco ball on a see-saw operated by a pulley attached to the door. Pretty crazy! European and American Art had its own gallery as well, where I saw some works by artists I know and lots of St. Jerome's. Was someone in acquisitions at the National Gallery really into St. Jerome?

In between two stints at the National Library, we walked out to Rideau Hall, where the Canadian Governor General lives. Tours of the house aren't offered during the week, but the grounds are open to the public. We mostly admired the fall foliage and played with our cameras before heading back downtown.

All in all, it was a good trip, even though everything didn't necessarily follow the original plans. I saw some interesting new sights, learned a little bit more about Canada, and, of course, got to hang out with friends. I'm glad I decided to go instead of just sitting around my house for the entire week off!

Parliament

That's me and Meghan standing in front of Parliament. There are some more photos (including the Alexandra bridge sign!) at my Flickr page, which I think you can access by clicking on the photo.
Yesterday a group of us walked down the street to Mount Royal Park to check out the Sunday Tam-Tams. The Tam-Tams are a weekly event through the summer. An informal group of drummers plays through the afternoon, and lots of others come to dance along or to simply relax and enjoy. While we were there, several of the roomies got palm readings. I'm pretty skeptical about that type of thing, but I'll admit that it was highly entertaining.

Another fun thing about Montreal: you can get your groceries delivered. For a dollar! That's really exciting if you don't have a car because you're not limited to lightweight items. So now I have important things like Tide. And Snack-packs. Mmm... pudding. To top it all off, Provigo gives 10% off to students every Monday! I know what day I'll be doing all my grocery shopping from now on!

Except I actually do have to go back tomorrow. This evening when I was making my Kraft Dinner (a.k.a. Macaroni & Cheese in the US) I discovered that my milk was curdled. That was a) pretty annoying, and b) really disgusting 'cause I just ate that milk on my cereal this morning. Gross! When I go tomorrow to buy milk, I think I'll go ahead and carry it back myself.
