A friend and former roommate of mine from college is in town for a law internship. I haven't seen her since graduation since she's been in South Bend and I've been... everywhere. We met up today and went to the National Zoo, where I finally got to see the famous pandas. ("Look at me! I'm a cute panda! I'm taking a nap!") Lots of the animals were napping, cause, hey, sunny afternoon, but we did see some that were more active, including two orangutans trying to bite each other and a cheetah digging into a meaty bone.

After the zoo we had a late lunch, and opted to sit outside, since it was pretty much perfect weather for it. Then we wandered around Kalorama and checked out some of the nice houses we'll never be able to afford to live in. (I'm going to be a librarian, after all, and she wants to work for the federal government.) It was great being able to catch up, and we both got to explore the city a little bit. Since she'll be here through July we're hoping to find some other fun weekend stuff to do.

I'm pretty wiped now. All the walking made my legs pretty tired, but hopefully I can get in at least a short bike ride tomorrow. Then I think maybe it's a reading day. And in four more days I'm head to Kansas City for a long weekend! :D
There's an episode of Gilmore Girls where Lorelai goes away for the weekend, and Rory plans a night in doing to do her laundry and watch TV. That is my night, minus the all the take out food and Paris, Jess, and Dean barging in. [livejournal.com profile] d4ni ran off to Columbus for five days, so it's just me, the cats, and, of course, the laundry.

I had no idea that Burn Gorman played Mr. Guppy in Bleak House! I did a little double take when he came on screen. (You know, Guppy acts a lot like Owen does in "Adam", following Esther around like a lost puppy. But unlike Owen, Guppy has awful hair.) Gillian Anderson is Lady Dedlock, but I already knew that. It must've been crazy trying to adapt a story with so many characters and subplots for TV, but so far it's very good.

Today I actually passed another person on the sidewalk on my way to the library! And by "passed" I mean that she was texting and almost ran right into me. But hey, somebody else walking somewhere! :D

Today was day one of my walk to the library fitness plan. (I returned Brideshead Revisited, which is fabulous and you should all read.) On my way home, someone leaving IHOP offered me a ride. No, my car did not break down. I am doing this voluntarily. Really. Apparently here in the KCK literally no one walks as a mode of transportation. To cement my eccentric image, I walked part of the way barefoot, cause my sandals gave me a blister.

Did you know that salmon costs about $15 per pound? Craziness! I think it's even more expensive for wild salmon. I read that the salmon fishing seasons in California and Oregon were cancelled this year, so there's a shortage. Anyway, I did buy myself a little piece of smoked salmon for dinner today. I need to eat more fish. That is, more fish than the no fish I've been eating for the past 23 years. It was actually really good. Whould've thunk it?
