alexiscartwheelThe 100th episode of Bones is coming up in just a bit, but before that, a look back at this week's Chuck non-finale. (The episode was originally intended to be the season finale, but NBC ended up ordering six more episodes. Yay for more Chuck!) The short version? It was awesome.
I thought it was both a strong individual episode and a very fitting end to the story arc. The whole season thus far has centered around Chuck's choice to become a "real" spy and the effect that's had on his life and relationships. Chuck's been changing, and the people around him have noticed. And as unpleasant as it is to watch Chuck and Sarah being apart and miserable, it really made sense for the characters.
At the end of last week's cliffhanger I was convinced that Shaw was going to kill Sarah, but I (like Chuck) was willing to accept that maybe I was wrong because I just never trusted him. He's been driven all along by the thought of getting revenge on the people who killed his wife, so why should he stop when it turns out to be Sarah, not the Ring? And Chuck finally got to be the hero—not because of the intersect, but because he's a good spy. They handled Chuck finally shooting someone really well, too. He's not a natural killer, so he tries to talk Shaw down first, but ultimately he'll do whatever it takes to save someone he loves.
And now, a moment of squee: Chuck and Sarah are finally together! I'm so glad the writers brought them together in a really authentic seeming way. It annoys me when shows keep two characters together because they think it will kill the show. I'm really confident that Chuck's writers will keep the show just as fun and compelling while exploring their new dynamic.
I really loved their scene in Chuck's apartment, too. Chuck is learning to be a bad-ass spy, but he's also still I guy in love, drowning his sorrows in video games and scotch. It's taken time, but Sarah's recovered from the shock of Chuck leaving her in Prague, and she's struggled with the way Chuck has changed, but she can see how underneath he's still the same guy she met and fell in love with. Zachary Levi and Yvonne Strahovski are both fantastic... it can't really be said enough. They really make you believe in these characters and care about them.
You know what else is fantastic? The developing rapport between Morgan and Casey! I loved that Morgan found out about Chuck's spy life, and now I'm loving how he's become more involved with the team. (And how enthusiastic he is about it! He's the new naive perspective on the spy life.) Casey's come such a long way from trying to kill Chuck to begrudgingly protecting him to caring about him as a friend and colleague... but who'd have expected him to ever stand up for Morgan? I also loved Casey's pep-talk to Chuck on the plane about how before he was the intersect he was smart.
The new Team Bartowski is going to be so much fun to watch! Seriously, this show is so good at changing things up.
There's still no word yet whether Chuck will be renewed for a fourth season, but I really hope it is. If you're not already, you really should WATCH CHUCK! Supposedly the beginning of the next arc (on April 26) will be a good point for new people to jump in. Doooo it.

Date: 2010-04-10 08:23 am (UTC)I did find it a little distracting that Sarah's hotel room appeared to be ABOVE the Eiffel tower. Have you seen the size of that thing? I did love Chuck's flailing shoe as he dived under the covers.
