So I just finished watching another new show called Moonlight because, yes, "Jason Dohring is hot" really is a legitimate reason to watch a show. What? It is! [profile] d4ni and I came to this conclusion through a careful analysis of the CBS website for the show. Our main research question: "Does Jason Dohring look hot in the promotional photos?" The answer: a resounding yes. So, nevermind the dubious nature of a vampire show on CBS, this show had to be worth checking out.... right?

So what's good about The Jason Dohring Show Moonlight? Well, uh, Jason Dohring's kinda hot. Seriously though, in the pilot he really is the best thing about the show. Mick, the main character, takes himself too seriously. Josef, Jason Dohring's 400-year-old vampire character, is actually funny.

"Vampire solidarity. Rah rah rah and all that."
Hee. Okay, so I like him cause he's snarky like Logan.

I also must admit that I enjoyed the Svengali reference that they threw in about the crazy goth-cult-leader guy. Trilby is a pretty weird book. Enchanted singers! Hats! Anyway...

What's not so good about Moonlight? Way too much voiceover narration. Voiceover narration is almost always a bad idea, and predictably, it is here. I also didn't get why Mick was giving an interview at the beginning of the episode. If he hiding the fact that he's a vampire, what's he doing talking about being a vampire? (Other than the obvious fact that they have to let the audience know that he likes garlic on his pizza and doesn't mind crosses. You know, set up the shows particular brand of vampire mythology.)

There's also Beth, who looks like a cross between Kate Winslet and Claire on Heroes. Apparently she was kidnapped by Mick's vampire ex-wife when she was a girl, and Mick rescued her. I smell an undead soap opera...

And why would dead goth-girl have the Hearst College (hee! VM!) mascot tattoed on her body? She's into blood sacrifice, vampire cults, and... varsity sports?

Overall, it was... okay. It was certainly no Veronica Mars. Pretty cheesy, but I think that comes with the territory. It doesn't seem as funny as Buffy (based on what little of Buffy I've seen), and like I said, takes itself far too seriously. Shows are known to get better after the pilot though. And it wasn't as bad as Private Practice.

Oh, and Jason Dohring was pretty hot.

Now if only I could get my hands on last night's House.

I still haven't watched the whole ep yet, but Jason *was* hot. And yes, that is a reason to follow the show at least a little bit. It's just okay. Oh and my take on the interview thing at the beginning was that he was dreaming it. Cliched, yes? But at least he wasn't actually giving an interview? Though it would have been a more interesting and Anita Blake-esque take on it to have vampires a known part of society...

There's a book series by Laurell K. Hamilton about Anita Blake, she's a vampire hunter and can reanimate the dead. The first couple books are actually pretty entertaining, from what I've heard it turns into a smut-fest after awhile, but anyways in that setting vampires are recognized members of society, there's been a whole suffrage movement and everything. It's a different take. Unlike Moonlight...

LOL. Sounds interesting. (And I have friends who I know enjoy a good vampire smut-fest... crazy librarians.)
