It's very serious! You will not have a brain when it is complete!

And today, in the spirit of randomness, my answers to a set of questions from [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey

Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

Fourth of July Post!

boom!

Yay graphic recycled from last year! (Efficiency FTW!) I'm headed to a barbecue at a friend's house this afternoon and to D.C. for the fireworks this evening. Before then, random update! )

(no subject)

Today I went to campus to work on some homework. Basically, it was a ploy to guilt myself into working by driving to a different state and sitting in a library. I still have a presentation on Thursday that I need to finish preparing for, but that'll probably mostly happen on Wednesday, my "day off." I'm making a website as my visual aid, but so far it is a bit craptastic. I've got a few half done pages up so far, only two of which are actually linked to each other. On the positive side, my article is about high school libraries, so I was able to justify spending time yesterday looking for screencaps from The Breakfast Club, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Harry Potter movies.

Speaking of Harry Potter, since the SQ forums closed this summer, I haven't been involved with fandom much (other than chat, which is also dying and is usually just me and Stu). So my question for any HP fans out there: what are your favorite HP related places on LJ? Fandom at large seems to favor fanfic featuring the most wildly implausible pairings possible, so where do the canon embracing fans hang out?

As for the Doctor Who fandom news: I'm both sad to see Tennant go and excited about Eleven. I really love Ten and would've enjoyed seeing where Moffat went with him, but it wasn't a huge shock since we've been hearing about the possibility of Tennant leaving for awhile. And since everybody else is doing it, Eleventh Doctor speculation wishlist! My favorite right now is Chiwetel Ejiofor. He was in Serenity, Children of Men, and Love Actually, among other things. Or how about Anthony Head? So what if he already played a villain, he's awesome!

Another super-busy week starts tomorrow. I miss free time.

New HBP Trailer!

I just discovered this in [livejournal.com profile] haro's post, and thought I'd pass along the news: there's a new international teaser for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! It's still ultra dark (until the end... whut?) but doesn't focus so much on the memory storyline.

I'm still trying to figure out what the deal is with Ginny standing in a puddle wearing her dressing gown. Also, the scene with Harry running through the field reminds me of Mulder and Scully running through the corn field in the first X-Files movie. Are there bees in this adaptation?

Now I'm all psyched for this movie, but it won't be released until next summer. Why, Warner Brothers, why?

I was looking at my giant list of books I've read this year, and I realized there is no HP on it, which seems kind of wrong. I did read individual chapters for the Deathly Hallows reread at the Sugar Quill, but that's it! I feel like I should remedy that, but I'm ready like ten other books right now. (Okay, if I take out the class one's I think it's really only four.) Maybe I'll watch OotP tonight. That'll be a good, quick HP fix. :)

OotP Anniversary

[livejournal.com profile] author_by_night pointed out that today is a HP fandom milestone: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was published, and asked where we were that day.

I was at work. At the time I was a page at the local public library, and I worked every Saturday from 9am-1pm. All morning I watched people come in to pick up their reserved copies of the book, but I had to wait until my shift ended to go home and read. I had placed a copy on reserve for myself back in January, the very first day the title was entered into the library catalog, so I had a number in the mid-300s. I knew it would come in the first day, but by around noon I was starting to worry that it might not get checked in before I went home. (Delivery boxes aren't unloaded in any specific order, after all.)

As for fandom, I started reading HP shortly after the US publication of Prisoner of Azkaban, I got my library copy of Goblet of Fire on the release day, and discovered online fandom sometime thereafter. By June 21, 2003 I was a regular poster at FA and had just decided to give up lurking and start posting at the Sugar Quill. Wasn't the final chapter of After the End posted the night before? I had been following it for some time, so reading the ending gave me something fun to do while I waited for the book!

As an Harry/Ginny shipper I was in a very unpopular minority. Fandom at large seemed to prefer Harry/Hermione and Ginny/Draco. (Although earlier in the series I thought Harry/Hermione was plausible, I didn't actively ship them. And then there was Goblet of Fire with it's Ron/Hermione goodness. At this point, my non-HP friends think I'm totally cracked.) Anyway, I remember one of my biggest hopes for the book was that Ginny would feature more prominently, and JKR definitely delivered! I can't really remember any other specific expectations, though I'm sure I had some.

Just for the lulz, I found my reaction to OotP from the Quill forums. Eighteen year old me says... )
Ah, nostalgia. Harry Potter fandom was just too much fun! :D

Music Stuff

Why doesn't the Johnson County Library have Fiction Plane? Grrrr. Last.fm won't let me stream them anymore. :( However, they do have Ministry of Magic. That's, of course, completely unrelated, but I do find wizard rock pretty amusing.

[livejournal.com profile] d4ni's opinion of the Ting-Ting's made me laugh. "The drums! The fucking drums!" I happen to like songs that repeat stuff a lot. It makes the lyrics easy to remember.

The radio station's here are all awful, but one of them sort of made up for it by playing Weezer for an entire hour yesterday. Remember the Keep Fishin' video? With the Muppets? Weezer + Muppets = WIN! :D )

Song of the week is Duffy's "Hanging on to Long." It's pretty awesome.

ETA: This week's free download on iTune is "Let's Dance to Joy Division." iTunes is being really great recently about giving me those great moments of "I already knew about The Wombats!" music snobbery. :D In reality, I think the iTunes people are just getting all their alt-rock and indie ideas from BBC radio.

Harry Potter Fic!

If you've been looking for some great Harry Potter fic to read this Sunday afternoon, look no further my friends! The lovely [livejournal.com profile] sea_thoughts wrote me a Harry/Ginny fic for my birthday, which is posted here at her journal.

Go! Read! :D

Ottawa Trip!

What better way to spend part of the “Study Break” than by going on a road trip? Meghan, Rosanne, and I decided to spend three days of our oh-so-productive week off in Ottawa, the nation’s capital. We planned to leave Tuesday morning, drive to Ottawa, then have the next three days to spend be tourists. However, like all good plans, ours fell apart pretty quickly.

In honor of the interview revelations...

... here's a completely unrelated drabble. Heh. Actually, it is about Neville, but not specifically Neville/Hannah. (Yes, Luna also appears, but not because of any personal Neville/Luna leanings.) Again, this was originally posted on the SQ drabble thread in response to the prompt "baby."

OMG cute Potter babies! )

I've got the week off from classes, so maybe I'll take some to write something a little longer. Who knows, maybe I can even finish something by the SQ submission date.

Fandom Insanity!

Last night, J.K. Rowling had her book tour stop at Carnegie Hall, and she answered some pretty interesting questions about the Harry Potter series. Of course, the two biggies are ships!

First off, Neville/Hannah!! I'm really excited that it's canon. Before I discovered Neville/Hannah, I couldn't really ship Neville with anyone because none of the more popular pairing seemed quite right. If you haven't been introduced to the joys of the Neville/Hannah pairing, go read Asking for Roses by Dogstar. She really understands Neville, and picked up on all the little hints of Hannah's personality that make her a great match for Neville.

Second, Dumbledore/Grindelwald! LOL. It's canon too! That should make the slashers happy, eh? I always like Dumbledore, but I think DH just gave him so much more depth. He wasn't the perfect figure that many readers seem to have wanted him to be, but I think it's much more interesting that his wisdom was gained through experience, that he had to re-evaluate his values and goals.

There's also a new SQodcast today, so as fandom days go, today's been pretty fun!

Well, it's no "Return of Setsuna and Karin"...

Okay, since [profile] d4ni asked nicely for me to share so she wouldn't be the only one posting random fic to her LJ. This was originally posted in the Sugar Quill forums in response to the drabble prompt "library." And no, it's actually not about Hermione.

Snape, Snape, Severus Snape

No, this is not my deep, intellectual analysis of Snape. Not even close. I spent most of the day working on group projects, and--long story short--Inmagic fried my brains. If you don't know what Inmagic is, it's okay, you don't want to.

In honor of my impending burnout, a video that never fails to make me laugh!

"I've found the source of the ticking!" :D Potter Puppet Pals rock my socks.
