I got up for work at 5:30 this morning and just got home.

*iz ded*

I drove into the District for the first time this weekend and got lost three times. I officially FAIL at Rock Creek Parkway. Somehow, I managed to get where I was going only fifteen minutes late.

I went to a different church this Sunday (cause I was too lazy too get up in the morning) and they had a folk group that was actually really good. That was refreshing. I learned that I still know all the words to "One Bread, One Body."

I've started watching Bones several years late, and I listened to my first Big Finish on the Metro. There was more Sarah Jane Adventures tonight, but I'm too tired to hunt it down right now.

In 1938 the Maryland band's two drum majorettes were suspended after parents and alumni complained that their skirts were too short. (I learn important stuff like this at work.) Also, the Wisconsin band got suspended this weekend, thus proving that Dr. Jon R. Woods actually knew what he was talking about all those times when he warned us not to act like the Wisconsin band.

Tomorrow... MOAR DEBATES!! *registertovote* I got my absentee ballot on Friday. I have eight choices for president. Cool.

And that's all she wrote.

My internet connection at home is very sketchy this week, which causes me much frustration. I am a whiny baby without internet access, especially on days when my short attention span gets the better of me. (There's only so many times I can stand to reread a paragraph about Coronado before I start going crazy!) Hopefully it will come back, or I will have muchas problemas watching Doctor Who on Saturday. And now, five completely unconnected thoughts:

I'm rambling today. )
1) On Saturday we went on a big trip to Missouri to go to the antique mall. I made one very important silly but amusing purchase: a 1953 Girl Scout Handbook. It includes many useful bits of information, including an organizational diagram, tips on the proper positioning of a reading lamp, and the procedures for ice rescue ("If the victim is helpless, go to him... When close to the hole, lie down and crawl.")

2) There was an oboist playing in church this week! I was invited to go to the 20s and 30s brunch afterwards, and I decided to be social for once and go. There was plenty of good food and conversation, so I was glad I went. Who knew I could actually have a fun time with three strangers and a priest? :D But the people at St. Michael's all seem really nice (people keep noticing I'm new and introducing themselves), so I guess it shouldn't be a huge surprise.

3) Yesterday my boss presented me with a stack of overdue notices and a stack of envelopes and asked me "Can you...?" and then did some jazz hands in their general direction. Um, what? In better work news, I got my first paycheck!

4) I finally filed my income taxes. I filled out all the forms way back at the beginning of February in a last minute rush before I moved, but then never bothered to mail them. But hey, two weeks before the deadline isn't bad! Maybe this year the IRS will finally figure out that my name isn't Alexander. (A girl can dream.)

5) [livejournal.com profile] d4ni are re-watching some of our favorite Battlestar Galactica episodes from seasons 1-3. Re-watching season 1 is interesting, and not just because all the characters look like babies! Everything was a lot more mysterious back then. Sure, "anyone" could be the final cylon, but it's easy to reasonably rule some people out. In season 1, we didn't even know how many cylons there were, so they really could be anyone. Also, Billy wasn't dead yet (Billy > Tory), Lee actually smiles every so often, and Roslin (and everyone else) didn't hate Baltar's guts yet.

6) Seasons 4!!! Battlestar Galactica on Friday and Doctor Who on Saturday! Best TV week ever? Quite possibly. (And is "Seasons 4" not the most awkward plural ever?)
It's 70 degrees in Kansas City today! The sun seems to have vanished temporarily, but it was very bright this morning. To celebrate the spring-like weather I broke out a short sleeved shirt and drove with the windows down (which led to a piece of paper on the back seat getting whipped out the window by the strong winds :D ). It's too bad Murray's not here with me, because this is the perfect weather to take him out for a walk. Unfortunately, tomorrow it's supposed to drop down back down to 30 degrees, and it's supposed to snow. The lovely weekend will be officially over; winter, however, will not.

Yesterday, [profile] d4ni and I went to the first week's installment in the Kansas City Chinese Film Festival. The film this week was Malu Tianshi (Street Angel), which was made in 1937. I don't know a lot about old films or Chinese films, so it was pretty different than a lot of movies that I've seen before. One synopsis we read on Friday night compared the film to Italian neorealism, and there were some definite similarities. The film is set in the Shanghai slums in 1935 and focuses on the hardships of life there. Though generally bleak, the film also has many comic moments, which makes for an interesting mix. It was something new, and it was free! After the movie, we continued with the Asian them and had Japanese for lunch. I had teriyaki chicken, which was delicious, and even tried a piece of sushi. Usually I don't like the vinegar on the rice, but it wasn't as strong at this restaurant, so maybe when we go again I'll try some more of their sushi.

This morning I went to a nearby Episcopal Church, St. Michael and All Angels, and I was really please with the experience. The service was very traditional (much more so than either of the Catholic churches I went to the past two Sundays). There was great organ music, which I love, and a nice choir, and the sermon was relevant and interesting. The woman I sat next to, who's only several years older than me, was incredibly welcoming. She recognized that I was new to the church and introduced herself, and afterwards she gave me a tour of the church and introduced me to some parishioners and priests. We even went up in the choir loft, where I got to see the organ pipes up close and got a great view of the whole church. It was a pleasant surprise for me to have someone go out of her way to make me feel comfortable and welcome on my first visit there.

Unfortunately, my absentee ballot still hasn't come yet. The Franklin County Board of Elections is too slow, so now I won't get to vote. Ballots have to be received by 7:30 pm on Tuesday, so I needed it by Saturday in order to fill it out and send it in on time. I'm kinda ticked that I don't get to vote, especially since Ohio is, as I mentioned before, kind of a big deal. :(

Still "church shopping." I'm looking for the right fit. This morning I went to the Anglican Cathedral. It's at University and Ste-Catherine, so it's actually pretty close to my house.

I was quite pleased with my choice. The service was a little longer than I'm used to, but that was partly because we sang every verse of every song, and there were both a choir and a pipe organ. That makes me ridiculously happy. I love liturgical music.
