After five days, I think it's finally time to admit that my iPod is gone forever. Excuse me while I go don mourning.

Okay, that's a little extreme, but I haven't seen my iPod since I went to North Carolina (I had a job interview, it went fine, won't hear anything for several weeks though) and it's a bummer. I called the hotel... no dice. So I guess I'll be buying a new one. I think Apple's due to update the iPod models soon, so I'll probably wait until that happens. I really liked my Nano, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the Touch. If anyone has one right now, what do you think of it?

I've been cooking up a storm this past week. On Saturday I made tiramisu to take to a nerdy board game night hosted by some friends, and it was a big hit. With the help of my trusty KitchenAid, I have honed my egg white beating skills! Sunday I made chicken tikka masala, rice, and some Trader Joe's naan (bf had never been to Trader Joe's... not sure if I managed to convince him on how he's been missing out). Monday night I made BBQ chicken sandwiches. Very tasty.

Fall semester started yesterday. For the first time in 20 years, this has very little effect on my life. It's refreshing! The clothes that the freshmen have been wearing, however, are absolutely terrifying. Hellooo 1993!

Why helloooo. I have not, in fact, fallen off a cliff. I have simply been neglecting LJ due to being busy with things. Things being mainly working and hanging out with my boyfriend.

So what's new in the last month, you ask? Well, it's really freaking hot. I still don't have a job. I went to C-bus for a whirlwind weekend, during which my mom introduced me to petfinder.com, leading to many wasted hours looking at cute kittens. I drank some grog with [livejournal.com profile] bookwench31 and [livejournal.com profile] jumperkid and checked out Eastern Market with [livejournal.com profile] sagacious_c.

Right now I'm making blueberry buckle. I can smell it already... it's going to be soooo delicious. :)

This weekend is the big ALA conference. Basically a gajillion librarians will descend on DC. And I'm going for free! (Thank you, work!) The thing is big enough that it takes up the whole convention center, plus a whole bunch of other hotels. The conference program is over 300 pages long. Yeah. It's a little daunting. I really have no idea how I'm going to attack the conference. A few of my fellow grads are planning a strategy session at our fave Burmese restaurant... hopefully I can make myself an awesome schedule. Or at least one that won't leave me absolutely exhausted on Tuesday.

  • It was 65 degrees this afternoon! In January! But it's okay, on Friday we're supposed to have snow.

  • I tried to make gnocchi today. My dough was a gooey mess, so I tried throwing more flour on, which didn't help much. After slicing up and trying to shape a few, I cooked them to test whether it was worth continuing. It wasn't. But oh well. At least my tomato sauce (in the crock pot!) turned out well.

  • pic of my failed gnocchi
    Mmm.. weird lumpy dough things.

  • I had my first class of the semester this evening. The class itself was fine. It's a Public Library Seminar, which is cool because I've been out of the public library world (professionally at least) for about four years now, but I'm still interested in that sort of thing as a career. The class is mostly online, but tonight was one of the four in person sessions, and unfortunately it's at a satellite campus. At rush hour. Skip to the end... it took me an hour and fifteen minutes to drive just under fifteen miles there. One of the reasons I do not see myself living in this city permanently.

  • The protagonist in one of the books I'm reading right now has a dog and a cat, both of which are featured prominently, and it's making me sad about not having any pets. :( Maybe next year. (Except I don't want to think about next year. It makes me worry about unemployment.)

Instead of stocking up on milk last night, like the rest of this city did, I ventured out to meet my aunt to see An Education at the E Street Cinema. If it's showing somewhere near you, I highly recommend it. Carey Mulligan stars (Sally Sparrow to Doctor Who fans) as Jenny, a 1960s school girl who falls for a charming older man. She's fantastic in the role, and completely deserves all the awards and nominations. The supporting cast, including Olivia Williams, Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina, and Dominic Cooper, were very strong as well. I'd really like to read the memoir the film was based on, but unfortunately it hasn't been published in the US.

I'm glad I went out last night because today the snow predictions actually came true. Over the last 24 hours we've had almost two feet of snow. That's almost unheard of in this region, and it was enough to shut down most of the city, including almost the entire public transit system. I had intended to some have friends over for a holiday party tonight, but that fell through, so I've had the apartment to myself all day. (One of my roommates is in India for a month, the other left for Rockville as soon as she got up this morning, before the roads became nearly impassable. She asked me for snow driving tips, and I sent her out with a dustpan and broom since she had no ice scraper.) It's been a bit lonely, but I've kept myself pretty busy. I'm all stocked up on baking supplies (I braved the long lines at Giant last night for eggs and cream of tartar... wouldn't want to be caught without if the store was closed today) so I mixed two cookie batters. I baked one variety (and hardly burnt any of them) but the other has to refrigerate overnight first.

Tomorrow I'm doing more baking... hopefully with an assistant. An old friend (from elementary school) is up from Williamsburg and wants to help, but she couldn't get out of the city today. Metro had better be running again tomorrow, cause it'd be fun to see her again.

Do not touch jalapeƱo seeds, then touch nose.

*facepalm*

I need remedial cooking lessons.

ETA: Use caution while washing brand new blender. Do not cut self on blades.

It's not a proper meal until I'm bleeding.

ETA2: Do not pick up chicken from the grill with fingers.

It's also not a proper meal until I burn myself.
