I've been slacking a bit on the school work this weekend. Yesterday I spent a lot of the day out in the yard planting and composting, and today I'm trying to work on laundry and cleaning. And in between I've been catching up on some TV watching. Maybe I should be doing projects, but I feel like a deserve a bit of time to relax, yeah? So without further ado, everything on TV ever. (Well, not quite.)

Right now, I really just want to watch more Bones, but unfortunately--or fortunately--I've run out of episodes and am the mercy of Netflix again. (I'm thinking of changing my subscription to get to DVDs at a time instead of one so I won't have to keep waiting, but I'm held back because a) it costs more money and b) I don't have extra time to watch more Bones.) Instead, I should be cleaning my room because it looks like a sty, as usual, and there is a real estate agent coming to look at the house later. I have to leave for a group meeting in an hour. We're working on a lit review right now and I feel way behind because I haven't read all my articles yet, let alone written abstracts. Also, I have a take-home midterm for my information technology class this weekend, not to mention all the usual reading.

I read The Titan's Curse during my Thursday commute, and I want to talk about that. I also want to blather on about my new job and why it is awesome, but I suppose all that will have to wait. Times like this I have to remind myself that I want to be in school because I want to get a full time job in the future. Right now it feels like school is just getting in the way of a good balance between work and having time for a life.

I think I have a cold again.

I got eskimo snowed today in my "Organization of Information" class. *headdesk* Also, we got all that bs about how people can only differentiate between colors that they have unique words for. Gah!!! I had already pointed out several times that she was wrong about cataloging rules, but I forced myself to hold it in that she was wrong about the linguistics stuff. (Yes, linguistics makes me ranty. Don't these people read Language Log?! That class is so frustrating... which is why I spent most of it today reading the Huffington Post.

Also, I got an e-mail that started with "There are three kinds of people in the world: those who can count, and those who can't." This is always a lame joke, but I think [livejournal.com profile] zankhamun and [livejournal.com profile] lib_chick42 will have a special appreciation for it's lameness.

My computer problems at work were fixed, then returned, then were fixed again. Now I can actually use Photoshop. That is to say, I can do my job.

I watched House tonight. Well, kind of, cause I was chopping vegetables in the kitchen to make a Turkish chopped salad for dinner, so for the first half I was mostly just listening to House. Whatever. This is what happens when I miss a few episodes. )

Tomorrow is my day off! Yay! I'll be spending most of it working on projects though. Were did all my time go, guys?

is incredibly awesome.

I sat down to watch the first episode last night and ended up watching three, but now I have to wait until Friday for Netflix to send the second DVD. Woe.

Who cuts to commercial in the middle of a live race?!?! Okay, yes, the 800m freestyle is a long race... but it's not that long. They couldn't wait for it to end? ("What? There are no Americans in this race?" Cause the Olympics are all about America winning, yeah? Not about watching some really awesome athletes, whatever country they may come from.)

But yay for Rebecca Adlington, even if they keep cutting away from her world record to show commercials and talk about Michael Phelps. :D

I was reading yesterday about modern pentathlon. They shoot, fence, swim, ride, and run all in one day. A complicated points system determines who gets to start running first, and the person who crosses the finish line first wins the gold. This is all sounds kind of crazy and cool, so I hope they'll show it on TV. Which means they won't. Alas.

Thanks to Language Log, I discovered that the Radio Times did a survey to determine the best and worst American accents by British actors with very amusing results. Hugh Laurie is the best, but also the fourth worst. Michelle Ryan is the worst, but also the third best. So basically, the results are completely meaningless, and prove that British people are poor judges of American accents, that there aren't many well known British actors on American TV, or a little of both.

The BBC then invited people to call in with their best American accents, with laughable results. (Most of the clips, if they sound American at all sound like some ridiculous regional mish-mash.) Thankfully, they have also provided a video of "How not to do an American accent."

Hugh Laurie really is that good though. Mom and I were just talking about that the other night. I had seen him in other stuff before House, but really wasn't that familiar with him or his work. I was shocked to hear his British accent the first time I saw him give an interview.

I, of course, can't speak with a British accent to save my life, which is why I don't pretend to know how. I can't even make myself sound convincingly Canadian, and that's less of a stretch. So even poor Michelle Ryan has a better American accent than my British accent. And honestly, she's not perfect, but I didn't think accent was that bad.

Sooo... I'm really tired. But I am having a pretty good time in Columbus.

My flight yesterday was way too early, but otherwise not bad. Everything was on time, and I pretty much just sat and watched Green Wing. Mom and I had lunch at DaVinci's and took Murray for a walk in the Park of Roses (on a hot day, getting hit by the sprinklers feels pretty good). After that I came home and crashed.

I think I might be turning my mom into a Doctor Who fan. I was watching "Turn Left" on SciFi last night (they cut out the bit with Wilf and the saluting!), and Mom came in and asked what it was. She said she thought Doctor Who was an old show (I think she saw some Tom Baker episodes on PBS at one point), so I explained the basics of the show. Then we watched "Rose" and "The End of the World" since I conveniently had the DVD in my computer.

Today was the big family party out in West Jeff. Dad's entire extended family is in town for the weekend (this is including cousins and even some second cousins and their children). I got to explain the whole yes I'm living in Kansas but I'm moving to Virginia in four weeks thing many times over. I had too much food and too much rum punch and got in a swimming pool squirt gun fight with my cousins. Yes, we're all dignified adults and stuff. My brother and I were talking on the way home about how weird the huge family stuff must be for our cousins spouses. We're used to the various, um, quirks of our relatives, but it could definitely be overwhelming if you didn't know everybody. Tomorrow we're all going out to dinner, which should be crazy.

Mom just got her cable reinstalled last week, and I've just discovered that we apparently have a DVR. I can fast forward through the commercials!
Weeeell... not quite. But I think my car's going to blow up any time something goes wrong. Thankfully, my mom's boyfriend is very good with cars, so he was able to talk me through it on the phone. Apparently my radiator was completely out of coolant, so [livejournal.com profile] d4ni and I went and bought some and filled it back up. Which sounds super simple, but I'm pretty stupid when it comes to car stuff. Just getting the hood up was a challenge, and then I had to find the right parts based on crappy diagrams in the manual.

So I really hope there's not something seriously wrong. I don't particularly want to spend lots of money fixing my car again, but I'm just about to move across the country again, so I'd have to. Cars really are too much trouble. Public transit please!

WTF... The Mole is on again? No wonder I don't watch TV these days. I can't wait for the Olympics to start so I can watch cool stuff like synchronized swimming, white water kayak, trampoline, or skeet shooting. (I'll be at home enjoying my mom's fancy cable.) Anyone else thinks the IOC should resurrect Olympic croquet? Anyone for some tug of war?

My internet connection at home is very sketchy this week, which causes me much frustration. I am a whiny baby without internet access, especially on days when my short attention span gets the better of me. (There's only so many times I can stand to reread a paragraph about Coronado before I start going crazy!) Hopefully it will come back, or I will have muchas problemas watching Doctor Who on Saturday. And now, five completely unconnected thoughts:

I'm rambling today. )
There's an episode of Gilmore Girls where Lorelai goes away for the weekend, and Rory plans a night in doing to do her laundry and watch TV. That is my night, minus the all the take out food and Paris, Jess, and Dean barging in. [livejournal.com profile] d4ni ran off to Columbus for five days, so it's just me, the cats, and, of course, the laundry.

I had no idea that Burn Gorman played Mr. Guppy in Bleak House! I did a little double take when he came on screen. (You know, Guppy acts a lot like Owen does in "Adam", following Esther around like a lost puppy. But unlike Owen, Guppy has awful hair.) Gillian Anderson is Lady Dedlock, but I already knew that. It must've been crazy trying to adapt a story with so many characters and subplots for TV, but so far it's very good.

Today I actually passed another person on the sidewalk on my way to the library! And by "passed" I mean that she was texting and almost ran right into me. But hey, somebody else walking somewhere! :D
So I turned on the live feed of Eurovision. OMG. This is soooo much better than American Idol. And by "better" I mean much, much more ridiculously insane.

There were scary guys in leather and PIRATES and guys dressed like angels and a golf cart and guitar hero man and freaking ICE SKATES! And, dude, they only give 15 minutes to vote! American Idol gives you several hours to keep calling in and voting for the same person. (Vote early and vote often. It's the American way.) So does this mean they'll actually announce the winner tonight!?!?!?! I vote Latvia. Cause, well... pirates.

Seriously, this shit is bananas.

There was also a new trailer for the second half of Doctor Who Series 4 this afternoon! I am sooooo excited! :D

Stuff like this is why everyone who knows me thinks I'm strange.

ETA: I'm sad that Latvia didn't win. Russia did have flaily ice skating, but that's not as cool as pirates.

My late birthday presents came from Amazon yesterday! Dad gave me cash, so I ordered Doctor Who Series 1 on DVD and Duffy's new album Rockferry. :D

Five day weekend coming up! Mom is moving back from Phoenix, and since she's coming through KC on the way, I decided to go home with her. Monday is Memorial Day and I'm taking Tuesday and Wednesday off to spend in Columbus. I haven't seen any of my family since I moved here in February, so I'm pretty excited.

David Brooks writes today about the cultural cachet of geekdom. He says, "in a relatively short period of time, the social structure has flipped. For as it is written, the last shall be first and the geek shall inherit the earth."

This morning I discovered GraphJam, thanks to a post at The Park Bench. The graphs there are more fun than anything that I remember from math classes. (Calculus, if I recall, was all about a man walking away from a lamppost.) Tears for Fears as a Pie Chart )

Sadly, there is no Battlestar Galactica or Doctor Who tonight, and no more Moonlight ever! Whatever shall I do? There is that Bollywood movie from Netflix though... :)

It feels like this has been an extrememly long week for some reason. Maybe because I haven't been sleeping enough, but you'll have that. The weekend is finally (almost) here, though (not quite, cause I'm at work for another hour), and I've got plenty of reasons to be excited (other than being easily excitable).

Tonight is the season finale of Moonlight, and there's a new episode of Battlestar Galactica for my Kara and Laura fix. Afterwards, I'm going to see Prince Caspian with friends. The Narnia books are some of my all time favorites, and the movie looks awesome.

Tomorrow is the Turkey Creek Festival. [livejournal.com profile] d4ni and I have no idea what it is, but it's at the park a couple blocks from our apartment. We know there is a parade involved. Basically, it promises to be amusing (either amusingly lame or legitimately fun, though probably the former). And Saturday night there's new Doctor Who!

Today is the end of finals week, so there have hardly been any people in the libary all morning. It's eerily quiet. I did some shelving (which was actually okay, cause it was the lit section, so the books aren't ten pounds each and actually look interesting), then spent a quality hour cleaning all the keyboards. YUCK! I now never want to use public computers ever again and have thouroughly rid my hands of all forms of bacteria. Sweet. At least I got paid today, so it (kind of) makes up for it.

In this morning's news, the International Association of Athletics Federations has ruled that double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius is eligible to run in the Olympic Games. I'm impressed by anyone who can run that fast, let alone a man with two prosthetic legs, so I'm glad they're letting him compete. (Also, I think discrimination against the disabled justified by science is still discrimination.) I honestly don't think runners are going to start amputating limbs to get prosthetic ones, and I think critics who cite that as a potential problem are vastly underestimating the stigma attached to disability that would prevent people from doing so.

Elsewhere in the world of sports, Speedo is involved in a monopoly suit. Supposedly their new full body suit could monopolize the competitive swimwear market. Now, I don't care if full body swim suits can shave off a few seconds of time, I'm still against them. Why? Swimmers have some of the fittest bodies ever and it's significantly less fun to watch men's swimming if they're completely covered up.
... but I'm seriously excited about Doctor Who and can't help myself checking the progress of my download every few minutes.

Coherent reactions may follow, but for now: Battlestar Galactica and Torchwood. OMG. For totally different reasons.

TV Picks

Looking for something new and interesting on TV? Here’s what I’ve been watching recently:

ETA: The cuts are to spare your flists, not because of spoilers, so never fear!
Some time earlier this year, I watched the first episode of Doctor Who, but I never really got into a it. I caught parts of a few episodes on one of the French cable stations this fall, and it seemed interesting enough, even in a language I don't understand, to warrant another go. This fall I watched the pilot of Moonlight and confirmed that Jason Dohring is still hot, but I wasn't completely sold on the series. Then I read an article a couple weeks ago that reported that Moonlight was one of the few new shows this season to gain viewers during October and November. That had to mean that the show got better over time, so I decided to give it a second chance as well.
The cataloging exam is over! I don't think I've ever waffled back and forth about punctuation on any exam I've ever taken. We got to use our books and our notes, but for some questions I think I actually found conflicting examples, which doesn't help and makes my brain hurt even more. And why was it necessary to have lecture and lab after the exam? I'm already in full out zombie mode due to the last week of studying.

For lunch we had truly awful pizza. Why is it that pizza and middle eastern food are served in the same restaurants in this city? I don't get it. The good thing about the pizza was the price, a mere $1.50 for a generous slice. I didn't pack a lunch today since all I had was instant oatmeal, oranges, and a box of Kraft Dinner, so it was better than nothing. One of my friends told me about a free vegan lunch that's served in the student union building; apparently you bring your own tupperware and fork and get rice, veggies and some sort of dessert. I'm not a vegan, but I'm curious about free food of any sort.

I miss Giant Eagle. Provigo is so inadequate in comparison. I'm still upset with them for not having any yams for my Thanksgiving dinner! But now at least I have bread again. And Tostitos, which in the moment seemed quite essential. And on a semi-related topic, I like I may have lost a few pounds, judged solely on the fact that I had my belt as tight as it would go this morning, and my pants were still completely falling down. (I was told it's because "all [I] eat is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches." What can I say? PB is cheap.)

This afternoon I watched and episode of Law and Order: SVU in French. I had to concentrate really hard and still only understood a few phrases. Ice T's dubbed voice freaked me out a little. I also started reading The Emperor's Children. Even though the McGill library does not buy "fiction" they have plenty of "literature." I've yet to get to a public library, so I'm glad to have a new source of reading material. I only read the first few chapters because, well, I couldn't stay awake any longer, even though it was only 3pm. See above, "zombie mode."

I got an e-mail from Apple today about the new version of OS X that's being released at the end of the month! I'm psyched because after the new release, I'm buying a new computer! I was considering an iMac, but I'm now leaning back towards a new laptop. The only question is: black or white?
After three straight days of non-stop group project work (ugh), the LIS 5 a 7 at Thompson House was a welcome relief. Yay for the grad student bar, pitchers of beer, and yummy nachos. Later, I accompanied some friends to a "Grade 7 Minutes in Heaven" themed party. Basically, the idea was to wear outdated clothes (what you would have worn in Grade 7) or just something ridiculously ugly. I wore my matching Adidas track suit, which my sister expressly forbid me to ever wear as a complete set, but I figure this was a special case. We had a really, really awful bottle of wine, so luckily we met some nice francophone guys who took pity on us and shared their beer. They claimed that my French sounded just fine, and laughed when I used one of my stock phrases and offered them each a grapefruit. :D

Saturday and Sunday were somewhat less fun. Saturday I headed in to the computer lab to take screen shots of my database project, but didn't have time to do the write up that's supposed to go with them because for some reason the lab has ridiculously short hours on the weekend. If we're not out on time, the doors get locked, so the only way out is through a fire door that sets off an alarm and summons security. Not good. Sunday was even more of the same. I was back at the library by 11 am to work on my database project again, then work on my other project (making a poster feels so 3rd grade), then a break for Timmy's, then cataloging exam review, then dinner break, then more cataloging studying. Tomorrow I'm due back at the library by 9am to return my closed reserve textbooks, then I've got a full schedule of more studying and project work! (Time to make friends with the Anglo-American Catologuing Rules.) Of course, there's a second midterm for Rico Suave's class on Friday, but I won't have time to start studying for that until Wednesday, once the projects are turned in and the cataloging exam is over.

Thank goodness we have a study break next week. I need it to restore my sanity. And to clean up my room. Cause yikes, it looks like a small tornado hit in here.

In better news: I watched the latest episode of The Office, which was, as usual, amazingly good. I think The Office is my new favorite show. (Sorry, Danielle, I know the people on The Bionic Woman are hawt and all, but The Office is on a whole different plain of awesome.) It's consistently funny, and it's such a welcome break from all my boring studying. Unlike other shows I watch *cough*Grey's Anatomy*cough* it doesn't make me want to go hurt the writers.
The Ohio State took down Kent State on Saturday, and after more losses by top-ranked teams, the Buckeyes are ranked #1 in the first BCS rankings of the year. This football season has been crazy! How come all the other ranked teams keep losing? Why is the rest of the Big 10 completely lackluster? And what was it again that I didn't stay for my fifth year? Anyone?

Moonlight

Oct. 3rd, 2007 07:45 pm

So I just finished watching another new show called Moonlight because, yes, "Jason Dohring is hot" really is a legitimate reason to watch a show. What? It is! [profile] d4ni and I came to this conclusion through a careful analysis of the CBS website for the show. Our main research question: "Does Jason Dohring look hot in the promotional photos?" The answer: a resounding yes. So, nevermind the dubious nature of a vampire show on CBS, this show had to be worth checking out.... right?

Now if only I could get my hands on last night's House.
